Extending across vistas liberally scattered with deep river valleys, alpine lakes and national parks, the towering limestone gorges of the Accursed Mountains, or Albanian Alps, provide the perfect backdrop to one of Europe’s last great adventures. Our journey takes us from the breath-taking expanse of Lake Koman deep into the heart of the Valbonë Valley, also known as the ‘Miracle of the Alps’. From here we follow remote highland trails which take us through quaint mountain villages and over the imposing Valbona pass, passing through some of the country’s most precious and unspoilt landscapes, including Theth National Park. This is an incredible adventure encompassing epic scenery, stunning walks and an insight into traditional but dying way of life.

DAY 1

Aeroport Mother Teresa – Tirana

Pick up at Tirana airport and transfer to Hotel. Visit on the National Historic Museum in Tirana, this visit will introduce you with the Albanian history from prehistoric times to present day.

Dinner in Traditional Restaurant. Overnight in Tirana.

DAY 2

Tirana – Black Cave of Pellumbas

Black Cave of Pellumbas , is one of main attractions outside Tirana. We drive about 45 minutes from Tirana to the village of Pellumbas. After a coffee a local bar you will start walking around 2 km or one and a half hour hike outside the village. The view from the trail is spectacular, with the mountainside dropping down into the canyon of Erzeni River. The cave itself is approximately 360 meters deep calculated as the longest in Balkan, and inside are impressive stalagmites and stalactites, as well as bats flying around the cave. The inside of the cave is completely dark after single upon entrance. 30,000 years ago the cave was a home to ancient cave bears. It was later used as a settlement for ancient humans during the Middle Paleolithic period. Locals had use the cave for shelter and to hide during wars.

DAY 3

Tirana – Koman – Valbona Valley

Departure from Tirana for Koman. We drive for almost half an hour to enter the world of the Albanian Alps. We stop in Koman and see a huge dam built in the 1980’s which encases the waters of Drini River and creates one of the biggest artificial lakes of the country. We take the ferry to Fierze (Kukes), a town in the northeastern part of Albania. Passing through the mountains of canyon created by the Drini River, the route reveals the wild beauty of the Albanian Alps. We will have the opportunity to take numerous pictures of unique views of the beautiful surrounding landscape and the lake. Drive further northward to Bajram Curri. Lunch at local restaurant. Drive along the banks of the Valbona River. The 40 km long Valbona Valley brings us right to the heart of the Albanian Alps. With an area of 8,000 hectares, the National Park of Valbona Valley is the gem of the Albanian Alps. The high and craggy mountains present to the visitors a fantastic festival of colors in every season. Valbona Village is the focal point of the Park. Its forests, river and creeks, flowers, characteristic dwellings, and the hospitality of its people make it an ideal place to visit. Dinner and overnight at guesthouses in Valbona Valley.

DAY 4

Valbona – Theth (6 – 7 hours)

After breakfast, departure from Valbona. Hiking from Valbona to Theth takes 8 – 9 hours (packed lunch on the way). We will stay for overnight in one of the guesthouses in Theth Village and experience the hospitality of the people. We walk downhill from the guesthouses, and visit attractions of the village. Dinner is served at the guesthouses.

DAY 5

Grunasi Canyon – Large Waterfall (2 km, 2 – 3 hours)

After breakfast, we set out to see the center of the village. On the way we take time to visit the small waterfall of Grunasi Canyon. We arrive at the village where we visit the church and the Kulla e Ngujimit (a tower house used in the past by men as a shelter from enemies with whom they had “blood feuds”) and then we depart to the Large Waterfall of Grunasi. Lunch and time at leisure to enjoy the nature and waterfalls of Grunasi. We return to the guesthouses. Dinner in the guesthouses.

DAY 6

Theth – Boga – Shkodra (10 km, 5 – 6 hours)

After breakfast at the guesthouse, we leave Theth to start trekking towards the village of Boga. We make use of the so-called “Shtegu i Dhenve,” a narrow pathway through the Albanian Alps that connects the villages of Theth and Boga. After two hours we arrive at the pass. It offers stunning views of Bjeshket e Namuna (The Accursed Mountains). The route continues downhill along the side of Radohima Mountain until we reach the village of Boga. We have lunch in this picturesque village surrounded by vertical slopes with peaks over 2000m high. In the afternoon the minibus picks us up at Boga village and brings us 50km back to Shkodra. We visit the Rozafa castle in Shkodra. In the evening we go out to one of the restaurants at the lakeside to enjoy the traditional fish specialties looking at the panorama of the lake of Shkodra.

DAY 7

Shkodra

After breakfast we will visit Rozafa Castle from where spectacular views all around can be admired and the feel of supremacy the Illyrians would have felt against enemies standing in such an imposing fortress. We will also visit the Historic Museum situated in a traditional house of Ottoman architecture, where the archaeology and ethnographic pavilions are small but very interesting. We will also take a walk in town were we will be able to see the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the only one in the country prior to abolition of faith by the communist regime. In 1967 it was turned into a palace of sports but has now been restored. Afterwards lunch in a village where culinary traditional expertise meets organic produce/ Optional free day in Shkodra.

DAY 8

Shkodra – Mother Teresa International Aeroport

After breakfast at leisure until time of transfer to the Airport. End of our service.
